18 Apr 3 day juice cleanse
Since my early twenties I’ve placed great importance on what I put in my body. My concern is well founded and confirmed by research that proves both the physical and mental benefits of specific foods/nutrients. I’ve fallen in love with the lifestyle of treating my mind, body, and soul the way nature intended. Insert Pure Raw Juice. I’ve been a Pure Raw Juice junkie since they first opened in Baltimore almost five years ago. Thinking back on it, PRJ (and @thehealthybrunette) is what got me into cold pressed juices.
Participating in a juice cleanse has never been on any of my to-do lists. I’ve always felt like I eat clean, drink lots of water, and exercise daily. Why would I need to go on a 3-5 day juice cleanse with no food?
One day I found myself wondering about the benefits of cleansing. “I wonder how beneficial a juice cleanse would be to detoxing/flushing my organs? I wonder what it would do to my energy level? I wonder how it would make me feel, physically, mentally, and emotionally?”
I reached out to the pros at PRJ. They put SO much love into their juices and only produce the best of the best. Their products are cold pressed and fresh to ensure the maximum nutrient content and kept in returnable glass bottles (you get 50 cents for every glass bottle of theirs you return). I gave their 3 day traditional cleanse a shot and here’s how it went.
I’ll start by saying that the cleanse comes in the most adorable box. Every juice is stacked in order per day and even comes with a pamphlet providing a description of each juice, along with it’s benefits.
Before I go any further I should note that I am a coffee addict. If I go without coffee I will suffer the world’s worst migraine and be forced to crawl into a dark room for 48 hours. Therefore, I did not give up coffee during this cleanse.
Pre-cleanse: the day before I started I had an açaí bowl from PRJ when I picked up my cleanse, salad for lunch, and salad for dinner. I started the cleanse on a Wednesday because I wanted to start the weekend feeling 100%.
Day 1: Coffee at 7am and juice number one at 9 am. I’m not a big breakfast person and can usually go until about noon without being hungry. I peed every half hour even though I barely drank any water. When I got home to my last juice of the day I realized that I actually had two left, not one. I got up to go to the bathroom about three times that night but was able to fall asleep right after. I didn’t feel hungry thought the day and LOVED the taste of every juice. I was pumped about day two.
Day 2: Waking up day two I noticed my skin looked hydrated, almost like it was glowing. I felt less bloated and my energy level was at an all time high throughout the day. At the end of day two I felt a bit hungry. I didn’t feel like I was starving by any means but my tummy definitely growled a few times after my last juice. The last juice of the day (cashew mylk) is so delicious that it’s hard to wait until later in the evening to drink it. I slept like a baby that night.
Day 3: By day three I had the juice timing down to a science. It felt like every time I was thirsty/hungry it was time for another juice. I loved this because it almost as if my body was alerting me when it was in need of some love. We live in a world where we are constantly on the go, eating as we move, and out of habit that it was a huge reality check with my own eating habits. After the final juice that night I WAS SO SAD IT WAS OVER. I’ve never felt more energized, internally clean, refreshed, and renewed. If they offered at 10 day cleanse I would do it in a heartbeat (no pun intended).
Post cleanse: I had no desire to grab food the first day of “freedom”. I had a coffee in the morning, taught a yoga class, took a yoga class, and then had a ginger shot and smoothie around 11am as my first meal. I didn’t feel hungry throughout the day and my body was craving high water foods like veggies and fruit. I was pumped to put some protein into my body and get back to cardio though.
If you’ve ever thought about giving a cleanse a try I would highly recommend giving it a shot. I’d also recommend doing some homework/research into what kind of cleanse would work best for you (and def read the reviews on the different options you’re considering). Use those three days or so to relax, unwind, and reset your mind, body and soul.
*sidenote: after returning all twenty one bottles, I had a $10.50 credit. Who doesn’t love a free juice and getting rewarded for being healthy?
